It’s now over 50 years since four Sandgate District State High schoolboys, all from the same class, decided to form a Rock ‘n’ Roll dance band. Little did they know then that the fledgling Sonics were embarking on a journey of such an enduring dimension, so unique, so inconceivable for their young impressionable minds.
Originally inspired by the unmistakable sound of The Shadows, the lads assembled a repertoire of instrumental hits from the early 60’s and soon became keenly sought after, performing at venues across the northern suburbs of Brisbane.
The Sandgate Town Hall soon became the adopted ‘stage’ for The Sonics and their more memorable dance events, regularly running sell-out dances themselves at this iconic local venue.
…. indeed it was back then that they preordained the title ‘Rock Under The Clock’ in reverence to Bill Haley’s timeless hit from the late 50’s, ‘Rock Around The Clock’
Today the guys are in their late 60’s – “60’s going on 16” they quip – and continue to thrill audiences with their tribute to the everlasting music of earlier years. Joined by exciting vocalist Jim Hansen and Annette Smith on keyboards, The Sonics present a vibrant stage production, faithfully replicating memorable hits in a tone, style and manner reminiscent of the early years.
The show is an experience that shouldn’t be missed, not only for the seasoned devotee but also those not so well-introduced to the blend of great Rock ‘n’ Roll music and timeless ballads that became synonymous with the early 60’s.
