Gerard Mapstone is without doubt one of Australias finest classical and flamenco guitarists and is currently composing new works for guitar to be released later this year.
Gerard Mapstone was trained at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, and won the classical guitar prize at the age of nineteen. With a much more desired need for flamenco he then studied in Spain and lived in Jerez de la Frontera. He studied with Jose Ignatio Franco who is a renowned flamenco Guitarist in Andalucia. Gerard then moved to England and joined flamenco fusion band Candela. Together they supported Tomatito and Estrella Morente at the Barbican Theare in London, along with WOMAD in Reding, Brighton Fringe Festival, Dali Gallery and live on Juice FM and BBC Radio. Whilst in England, Gerard continued his studies with Carlos Bonell, guitar professor at the Royal College of Music, London. Gerard first came in contact with Carlos when he was 17 at a summer workshop in Brisbane, which discussed the works of Albeniz.
Since returning to Australia Gerard has performed at the Tyalgum Classical Music Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, QLD Music Festival, Brunswich Music Festival Melbourne, Noosa Jazz Festival, Festival of Colour (NZ), guest soloist with members of The Queensland Orchestra and Marist Youth Orchestra, guest soloist with The Kelvin Grove Wind Orchestra, QPAC Doch and the Great Siberian Circus, The Greatest Show on Earth in Longreach (QMF), Electric Lennin The Opera in Lismore (QMF) and Live on ABC Classic FM.
Apologies for the delay, the event went really well on Thursday. Gerard was great, his music was perfect for the occasion. Kind regards
Thanks
